Portfolio: The Gargoyle Princess of Yezi Baba

Allow me to proudly display my first-ever entry into a DTIYS (“Draw This In Your Style”). The character is, as the title implies, a Gargoyle Princess. She was created, as the title implies, by Yezi Baba for a webcomic that you should totally look up and read.

Behind The Scenes:

Actually, this whole post is a behind the scenes. As I said when this was first shared on Instagram, one of the things I really like about Yezi’s work is that it dares to be itself. I have a lot of respect for that. Most modern character art is drawn in a style that, shall we say, has to be done a certain way, to be done “right.”

For this and other reasons, I was not certain I could give this character The Melkanos Treatment, but doing so turned out to be immensely fun and informative. (The chains on the earrings, for example, almost drew themselves thanks to a happy use of blending modes, and you can learn a lot about how fire is drawn, by drawing fire. Er, so to speak.) I will always be grateful for the opportunity to participate, and for the kindness the original artist has always shown for an incomplete stranger half a world away.
