Behind the scenes:
This was one of those instances where the pose demanded the painting. A friend of mine was lounging against a railing at the Alexandria Bay Motorcycle Rally a few years ago, and when I saw her, I saw the above image, flaming wings and all. It had to be done, and she graciously allowed it. (Yes, I know that it would have made more sense to have the spear in front, but I employed a little artistic license for the sake of symbolism. This way, there is nothing barring her progress… not even herself.)
So, two takeaways for you:
- always be open to inspiration, and it will hit you like the fist of an angry god
- A good portrait always captures the spirit of a person, not just their appearance
